Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - Aaron Sabato and Alerick Soularie both homered while Will Holland added a multi-hit game in support of a strong performance by the pitching staff as the Cedar Rapids Kernels took game five of their series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-3. The Kernels' win improves their record to 29-15 on the year as they stretch their West Division lead to two full games on Wisconsin.
Brent Headrick allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over 4.0 innings of work, striking out three. The southpaw threw 45 strikes on 69 pitches with 10 whiffs.
Wisconsin took the lead early with a leadoff home run in the first. Two innings later in the home half of the second, Kyler Fedko opened the frame with a walk and Seth Gray was hit by a pitch. Soularie advanced the pair 90 feet each with a one-out groundout, then Will Holland blasted a two-run triple into right. The relay throw from second sailed out of play as Holland slid into third, awarding Cedar Rapids' centerfielder with a little league home run for a 3-1 Kernels lead.
The Timber Rattlers added a run each in the fourth and fifth on solo shots, tying things at three. Sabato made sure things wouldn't stay tied for long, belting a towering three-run home run out to right-center. Soularie tacked on one more with a no-doubt homer crushed to left-center, then added another run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
David Festa picked up the win following Headrick out of the pen', tossing 4.0 innings of one-run ball on two hits and a walk. Festa struck out three and threw 41 strikes on 66 pitches. Brad Hanner closed things out with a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out one.
Fedko drew three walks and scored twice while Seth Gray reached base three times and had a double.
The series finale is set for 2:05 p.m. on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
