Ryan Hanigan Joins Sea Dogs on MLB Rehab Assignment

Portland, Maine - Boston Red Sox catcher Ryan Hanigan is expected to join the Portland Sea Dogs on a Major League rehab assignment tonight (Saturday, June 27th) when the Sea Dogs host the Reading Fightin Phils at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field.

Hanigan, 34, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 2nd with a fractured right hand. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on May 3rd. In 19 games with the Red Sox this season, Hanigan is batting .222 (12-for-54) with one home run, five RBI, 11 runs scored, nine walks and 12 strikeouts.

Hannigan started his rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on June 22nd. In four games with the PawSox he hit .182 (2-for-11) with two runs scored.

A resident of Andover, Massachusetts, Hanigan was acquired by the Red Sox from the San Diego Padres on December 19th, 2014, in exchange for 3B Will Middlebrooks. He previously spent seven seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (2007-13) and one year with the Tampa Bay Rays (2014). Hanigan has played in 577 career games and has compiled a career line of .255/.353/.340 with 26 home runs, 177 RBI, 416 hits, 157 runs, 229 walks, and 210 strikeouts. In his career as a catcher, Hanigan has caught 37% (118-316) of attempted base stealers. He led the National League in caught stealing percentage in 2012 (48.5%) and 2013 (45.5%).

Hanigan is the third Red Sox player to rehab with the Sea Dogs this season, joining Justin Masterson (June 5) and Shane Victorino (May 8-9). Hanigan is the 38th player to make a Major League rehab assignment with the Sea Dogs and the 32nd as a Red Sox affiliate.
