Sluggish Bats Waste Ynoa's Strong Start, 3-0

AKRON, OH - Gabriel Ynoa fired eight innings, a Double-A career-best, but the Binghamton Mets offense and defense provided no support in a 3-0 loss to the Akron RubberDucks on Saturday night at Canal Park. Ynoa allowed one earned run while the B-Mets mustered just three hits and collected none after the fourth inning in their fourth shutout loss of the season.

The Ducks cracked the scoreboard in a flash in the second. Ronny Rodriguez ripped a triple into the left-field corner and Jordan Smith wasted little time by bringing home with a groundout to second.

The lone tally was enough for Akron starter Adam Plutko as he nimbly kept the B-Mets off the scoreboard over seven innings. The righty's only challenge came in the second when he side-stepped a pair of singles in a scoreless inning.

After surrendering a two-out single to Aderlin Rodriguez in that inning, Plutko retired 16 of the next 17 B-Mets he faced, capping his night with three straight perfect innings. The righty knocked down 11 consecutive batters after Brock Peterson's double in the fourth.

Akron took advantage of Binghamton's shaky defense and stretched their lead in the seventh. Following a fielding error by Dustin Lawley, Tony Wolters laced an RBI triple past the dive of Eudy Pina in right field. Erik Gonzalez capped a personal three-hit game by legging out an RBI infield single to short.

Josh Martin struck out two in a perfect eighth before handing off to Jeff Johnson in the ninth. The righty notched one out before walking LJ Mazzilli, ending a stretch of 15 straight B-Mets retired. Peterson worked out a two-out walk to extend the game for Brando Nimmo. Representing the tying run, the B-Met outfielder grounded out to second on the first pitch he saw.

Plutko (3-1) struck out five and issued no walks over seven innings in the win. Ynoa (4-5) gave up three runs (one earned) on eight hits while going eight innings for the third time in his career. Johnson earned his 11th save.

The B-Mets (37-36) continue their final series of the season against the RubberDucks on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM. RHP Luis Cessa takes the mound for Binghamton.
