
Pointer's three home runs lead Fightins to win

Brian Pointer registered the first three home run game and 5-RBI game of his career as the Reading Fightin Phils (39-35) defeated the Portland Sea Dogs (27-48) 8-5 on Saturday night. The last time a Reading player hit three home runs in a game was Jim Deschaine at Erie on 7/3/05.
Kelly Dugan hit a one-out RBI double off Heri Quevedo in the top of the first inning to give the Fightin Phils a 1-0. KC Serna scored the run after hitting a double in the previous at-bat. Brian Pointer extended the lead to 2-0 with one out in the top of the 2nd inning as he hit a home run off Quevedo.
Sam Travis put the Sea Dogs on the board off Biddle in the bottom of the second inning with a sacrifice fly. Cole Sturgeon scored on a ground ball, double-play in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game for Portland. Heri Quevedo left the game after completing five innings. Mike McCarthy entered the game in the sixth inning for Portland.
Brian Pointer hit a two-run home run with one-out off McCarthy to give Reading a 4-2 lead. Pointer hitting two home runs in a game was done for the first time since Art Charles on 5/9 at Erie. Portland took the lead from Reading in the bottom o the sixth inning as Manuel Margot hit a three-run home run off Biddle to give the Sea Dogs a 5-4 lead.
Jesse Biddle pitched six innings and gave up seven hits with five runs (four earned) allowed. He issued three walks and recorded three strikeouts. Ethan Martin pitched the seventh inning and issued two walks.
Pointer hit his third home run of the game, a two-run shot off Miguel Celestino in the top of the eighth inning to give Reading a 6-5 lead. JP Crawford hit a RBI triple to score Gustavo Pierre to extend the lead to 7-5. Jorge Marban entered the game after the triple by Crawford and gave up a RBI single by KC Serna to see the Fightins take an 8-5 lead.
Ryan O'Sullivan entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. He retired the side then came out to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning. He earned his first save since 8/17/13 against Dunedin when he was with Clearwater (A+) as he retired the side to end the game.
The Fightin Phils and Sea Dogs will be back at it on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. First pitch is at 1:00 pm. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio 1240 AM/98-5 FM and fightins.com beginning at 12:30 pm.
