Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk Admirals Head Coach Jim Johnson announced today that veteran forward Ryan Craig has been named Admirals team captain.
"We have a solid group of players with strong leadership qualities throughout our locker room," said Johnson. "There are six to eight players on our team that I would be comfortable with giving a letter on their jersey any night. It has been evident all year that Ryan Craig is a great leader for this hockey club and he will be the Captain of the Norfolk Admirals."
Craig, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound left wing from Abbotsford, British Columbia, is a veteran of seven professional seasons. This is the second time in his professional career that he will serve as a team captain.
Craig has appeared in 36 games for the Admirals this season, scoring 14 goals and 22 points. He ranks second in goals and is tied for second in points. Craig has also appeared in three games this season with the Admirals' NHL parent club, the Tampa Bay Lightning, recording five penalty minutes.
Craig has appeared in 207 career AHL contests between the Admirals, Hershey Bears and Springfield Falcons, scoring 60 goals and adding 42 assists. He served as Springfield's captain during the 2005-06 season. He also was captain 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons as a junior hockey player with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League.
Craig appeared in 54 games for the Lightning last season recording two goals and four assists. The 27-year-old, seventh-year pro has appeared in 184 career NHL games - all with the Lightning - with 32 goals and 31 assists in those games. Craig was selected by the Lightning in the eighth round, 255th overall, of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
The Admirals will embark on a seven-game road trip through the Northeast beginning tonight against the Springfield Falcons. They kick off a six-game homestand at Scope on Wednesday, February 3, against the Hershey Bears.
