Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings team home run leader Ryan Costello will participate in this year's Midwest League Home Run Derby on Tuesday, June 19th at 4:30 PM (CDT) at Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing, Michigan.
Over the first half of the 2018 season Costello has led the team in home runs with nine. A 461-foot home run hit by the LumberKings regular first basemen on Sunday, May 6 against the Dayton Dragons is the still the longest of the season hit at Ashford University Field.
Costello, 21, jumped at the chance after hearing he had been offered a spot to participate in the Home Run Derby. Saying "[I'm] very excited to be part of my first home run derby of my professional career."
This will not be his only home run derby experience though. During his amateur baseball days, Costello appeared in a summer high school baseball tournament's home run derby.
"It went well," said Costello of his high school derby experience. "I hit like four of five home runs. Nothing crazy but I was little back then."
The LumberKings have not had a home run derby winner before in their franchise's history but Costello said of his experience "it's just something I'm going to try and have fun with."
Costello is one of four LumberKings who will play in the 54th Midwest League All-Star Game. Joining teammates Jack Larsen, who will start the game and play in the outfield, and pitchers Ryne Inman and Collin Kober who will both come out of the bullpen.
