Dragons Unable to Overcome Early Deficit, Lose 8-4

Dayton, Ohio - The Bowling Green Hot Rods jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the first innings and held on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 8-4 on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field before a crowd of 7,706. The Hot Rods handed the Dragons their sixth straight loss and will try for a sweep of the four-game series on Monday night.

The start of the game was delayed by two hours, three minutes. When it began, Bowling Green's Vidal Brujan hit the second pitch for a triple off the right field wall. He scored later in the inning on Zach Rutherford's sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. The Hot Rods added five more runs in the second, keyed by a three-run home run by Carl Chester, to take a 6-0 lead.

The Dragons battled back and eventually got back to within three runs, but they could not get any closer. The Dragons scored in the third on an RBI single by Jeter Downs, and then added another run in the fourth when Stuart Fairchild tripled and scored on John Sansone's single to make it 6-2.

Bowling Green added one run in the top of the fifth, but the Dragons responded with two in the bottom of the same inning. The first run scored on Montrell Marshall's RBI single, and Sansone was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 7-4. But the Dragons did not have another base runner until the bottom of the ninth and did not score again. Bowling Green added a run in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Andrew Jordan (1-2) was charged with the loss. He worked four and one-third innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Reliever Wendolyn Bautista worked three and two-thirds, allowing one run on one hit with four strikeouts, and Dauri Moreta pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Downs, Fairchild, and Mitch Piatnik each had two. Fairchild's triple was the only extra base hit.

The loss dropped the Dragons to 29-32 in the first half with seven games to play. Bowling Green improved to 40-21. The Dragons have a combined record of 4-18 against Bowling Green and Lansing, the top two teams in the East Division. They are 25-14 against the rest of the league.

Up Next: The Dragons host Bowling Green in the final home game of the first half on Monday night at 7:00 at Fifth Third Field. Adrian Rodriguez (3-2, 6.00) will start for Dayton against Bowling Green's Austin Franklin (3-2, 3.81).
