Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - Ernie Clement's single in the top of the 10th inning scored extra-innings baserunner Nolan Jones to give the Lake County Captains a 5-4 victory over the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond.
After both teams combined for five runs in the first inning, scoring was at a premium the rest of the afternoon. Clement drove in his first run of the game on a single to center field scoring Tyler Friis. After a fielder's choice pushed Lake County's lead to 2-0, the Loons responded with three of their own in the bottom half.
Brayan Morales scampered home on a fielder's choice to open the scoring for Great Lakes, followed by Jared Walker scoring on a single from Eric Peterson. The Loons (21-40) then put on the double steal with two outs as Peterson stole second safely, allowing Carlos Rincon to score without a play. Peterson and Brandon Montgomery each had two hits for the Great Lakes.
But after the Loons added their fourth run of the game in the fourth inning when Montgomery scored on a Romer Cuadrado single, the road towards Lake County's comeback began.
In the seventh, Friis brought Ulysses Cantu in to score with a single. Friis, who went 3-for-5 on the day, was joined by Clement and Gonzalez with multi-hit games. Jose Vincent then doubled in the eighth to bring Laureano in to score for the Captains (26-37) to tie the game.
Both runs were surrendered by Melvin Jimenez (BS, 2). After pitching a harmless top of the ninth, Andre Scrubb (L, 3-1) faced the tough situation of pitching with a runner on second base to start the 10th inning. The rule was instituted across Minor League Baseball at the start of the 2018 season. Edwin Uceta started for the Loons and went 5.0 innings allowing two runs, neither of which were earned, on six hits.
Juan Hillan, who came into Sunday's game with a 0-7 record and a 6.27 earned run average, started for Lake County and allowed four runs on five hits over 5.0 innings. Dace Kime (W, 1-0) picked up his first win of the season and Kyle Nelson (SV, 3) struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th to end the game.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
