Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings for the second time this season swept a doubleheader, dropping the Kane County Cougars 9-1 in game one and 4-3 in game two. The wins marked the first time since April 16, 2011 that Clinton (37-26) had taken both ends of a doubleheader from Kane County (30-32).

GAME ONE

A seven-run bottom of the fourth by the LumberKings in game one was more than enough to back starter Steven Moyers. Clinton never trailed in either of the doubleheader contests and started the scoring in game one in the bottom of the second inning.

A rally for free by Cougars starter Jhoan Duran gave Clinton an early 1-0 lead. The righty allowed a leadoff single to Dimas Ojeda and then lost control of the strike zone. Duran (2-2) walked Louis Boyd, hit Greifer Andrade, to load the bases, and then forced home a run with a walk to Ryan Scott.

The Cougars scored their only run of the game with two out in the top of the third. Moyers (1-0) allowed a double to Yan Sanchez off the wall in center and a fielding error on first basemen Ryan Costello allowed him to score, tying the game.

Moyers, who picked up his first win of the season, held Kane County to just the unearned run over his six innings of work, walking none, and striking out four to tally his first quality start of the year.

Clinton broke the tie with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. A string of five consecutive one singles but Clinton put them on top for good. 10 LumberKings batters came up in the inning, with Johnny Adams capping the rally with a two-run double off the wall in left.

Andrade then added a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. The home run was his third of the year and capped a game where he was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a home run.

GAME TWO

In the back end of the twin billing Clinton survived Renae Martinez break out performance at the plate. The Cougars catcher drove in all three of their runs going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBI. Still Clinton rallied late to drop Kane County 4-3.

The LumberKings again struck first, tallying three runs in the bottom of the third off Kane County starter Jake Winston. Four straight LumberKings reached with one out in the inning to put Clinton on top 2-0. Johnny Adams, who drove home four over the two games, ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center.

Winston (0-1) took the loss for Kane County with a 4.1 inning outing in which he allowed all four of the LumberKings runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out one.

Oliver Jaskie started for Clinton in game two and earned his third win of the season for a five-inning outing, allowing three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two.

Martinez started the scoring for Kane County with an opposite field solo home run to right in the top of the fourth. The homer was his fifth of the season.

In the top of the fifth, Martinez tied the score with a double off the wall in right that drove home two. Jaskie (3-5) then retired Ernie De La Trinidad to end his afternoon on the mound.

The game's deciding run was scored in the bottom of the fifth as Clinton answered the Martinez double with a run of their own. The LumberKings loaded the bases with one out and Adams worked a walk to force home the fourth and final run of the game.

The LumberKings now own a two-game lead atop the Western Division with a magic number to clinch a playoff spot at four games.

The LumberKings will play the finale of their five-game series with the Kane County Cougars on Monday night. Clinton will throw right-handers Ryne Inman (3-3, 4.89). First pitch for game one is slated for 6:30 PM.
