Ruwe Goes the Distance as Saints Win 5-1

ST. PAUL, MN (August 13, 2012) - At the end of July Kyle Ruwe was sitting at home hoping a team would call on him. He stayed in shape anticipating someone would dial his number. The veteran got that call and the St. Paul Saints are glad they made it because he has been sensational. On Monday night he tossed a complete game in a 5-1 Saints victory over the Gary SouthShore Railcats at Midway Stadium in front of 4,006.

Ruwe finished the game by retiring the final 16 batters he faced and went 21 consecutive batters without allowing a hit. The only batter to reach base after the third inning was Brian Kolb, who was hit by a pitch with one out in the fourth. He tossed 120 pitches, 78 for strikes and earned his first complete game of the season and first since July 24 of last season when he was with the Sioux Falls Pheasants, but he allowed four runs in that game. On Monday he allowed one unearned run on four hits while walking one and striking out six. The lone run the Railcats scored was in the first when Adam Klein led off with an infield single to short and advanced to second on a throwing error by Joe Spiers on the play. The next hitter, Mike Massaro, singled him home. Ruwe would walk a hitter in the second, but got a double play to end the inning, one of three on the night. In the third he would allow his final hits of the night when David Cooper led off with a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Klein. Ruwe, however, would get a strike out, a comebacker ground out and a ground out to short to strand the runners.

With the Saints trailing 1-0 in the third Jon Townsend led off with an infield single. Jake Krause singled Townsend to third, however, Krause would get picked off of first on the fake to third pickoff attempt. With two outs Jim Rapoport tied it at one with a single. Joe Spiers singled Rapoport to second and Willie Cabrera gave the Saints a 2-1 lead with an RBI single.

In the fourth the Saints took a 3-1 lead when Jose Hernandez doubled, Ronnie Bourquin walked and the two moved up on a sacrifice by Jon Townsend. Krause's ground out scored Hernandez.

The Saints would tack on runs in the seventh, on a sac fly by Rapoport, and a run in the eighth on an RBI double by Bourquin.

The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series on Tuesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (10-4, 3.26) to the mound against Railcats RHP Stephen Hiscock (4-5, 2.87). It is Midway Matinee at the ballpark. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
