Karr's 11th-Inning Blast Completes Laredo Comeback

LAREDO, Texas - Palmer Karr Jr. hit a 3-0 fastball deep into the Laredo night to cap another Lemurs comeback over the Grand Prairie AirHogs despite a brilliant night offensively from Jairo Perez, beating Grand Prairie 8-7 in 11 innings on Sunday at Uni-Trade Stadium, as the AirHogs' lead in the South Division fell to four games.

The AirHogs (44-37) had led the game 4-0, 5-4 and 7-5 before Laredo (39-41) tied it each time.

Singles by Keanon Simon and Jonny Kaplan set Grand Prairie up in the first, before Perez hit a sacrifice fly to give the AirHogs the lead. A two-out RBI triple and an error by Jimmy Mojica scored Simon and Alberto Espinosa in the second made it 3-0, and back-to-back hits by Kaplan and Perez then made it a four-run lead.

But the Lemurs got all back in the third, with three singles and a three-run home run with two outs and two strikes by Brian Peterson to tie it at 4-4. Perez hit his first home run, off the leftfield foul pole, with two outs in the fourth to put the AirHogs back on top, but after starter Josh Strawn got through the fifth, Laredo tied it against the Grand Prairie bullpen in the sixth.

A single, a walk and an error on a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases with no outs against Ronnie Morales. Anthony Scelfo then hit a grounder to second, that Bryan Frichter fielded, before tagging Stephen Pearson and throwing to first for the double play, but Laredo tied the game on the play. At first, the umpires ruled that Frichter did not apply the tag, before reversing the call and calling Pearson out. That led to Lemurs manager Pete Incaviglia's second ejection of the series, arguing with Kurt Branin, the home plate umpire.

Morales got out of the inning, and Derrick Miramontes got around a two-out single in the seventh, before Perez's two-run homer to left off Edwin Walker in the eighth gave Grand Prairie the lead again at 7-5.

But for the third time in a row, the Lemurs came back against Adam Miller, who allowed a one-out single to Brian Peterson and a two-run home run to left by Stephen Pearson to tie the game.

Grand Prairie mustered nothing in the ninth against Mike Benacka, before getting three straight two-out walks in the 10th but Benacka got Andres Rodriguez to ground out.

Miller pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and Justin Dowdy (2-1) worked around a leadoff walk in the 10th, before Chaz Roe (2-2) got the last out in the 11th with two on and two out.

Dowdy struck out Mojica to start the bottom of the 11th, but he fell behind his ex-teammate Karr, who made him pay on the 3-0 pitch.

Notes: All five home runs were hit to left on a night where the wind was blowing out that way at upwards of 20 miles per hour.Perez and Kaplan each had three hits, while three other AirHogs had two.Grand Prairie left 15 men on base, while Laredo left nine.Eight Lemurs had at least one hit.The AirHogs have now lost four straight overall and have clinched a losing record on the road this season, dropping 15 of their last 16 away from QuikTrip Park.
