Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City Rush began their weekend doubleheader against the Wichita, looking to redeem a disappointing loss against division rival, the Rocky Mountain Rage on Wednesday. The Rush were able to pick up the first goal of the game, but later came up short, dropping the game, 4-2.
The first period was a solid start for both squads. The Rush got on the board first as Chris Lipsett put the puck past Thunder goaltender, Krister Toews. The Lipsett goal came at 12:11 into the period and was set up by Rich Hansen and Matt Zultek. The Thunder wouldn't respond until the two minute mark as Mike Zbriger found the back of the net. Zbriger was assisted by Ben Boudreau and Chris Shudo. The penalty kill for both squads was good as neither team converted on the man advantage. The shots in the period ended up being fairly even as the Rush fired 8 and the Thunder shot 7. The first period ended with Wichita and Rapid City tied at 1-1.
Wichita tallied another goal early in the second period when Brad Thompson found the back of the net at 1:41. The goal was assited by Boudreau and Joel Hanson. The Thunder would keep their momentum as they grabbed a powerplay goal at 5:18 into the middle frame. Mike Zbriger was the one who snuck one past Beaudry with help from Hanson, who tallied the previous assist, and Jason Duda. The Rush would cut the lead in half with a goal from Jon Pelle at the 5:35 mark. Pelle was assisted by Derek LeBlanc and Mitch Stephens. It remained a tight contest not only on the scoreboard but also in the shot column, as the each squad took sixteen shots. Both squads had players dropping the gloves in the second as Rapid City's Jason Goulet and Wichita's Rob Stanfield received majors for fighting. The period ended with Wichita maintaining their lead, 3-2.
The third period saw only one goal, which unfortunately for the Rush, belonged to Wichita. At 11:59, Thompson grabbed his second goal of the night, which was assisted by Hanson and Jason Tessier. It was a fast moving period for the teams, and the Rush put up nine shots against Toews, while the Thunder fired thirteen at Beaudry. The game ended with Wichita hanging on to their lead, and a victory of 4-2.
Up next for the Rush is the second game of their doubleheader against Wichita. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena, where the Rush and their fans will celebrate Military Appreciation Night, with a jersey auction immediately following the game.
