Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City Rush celebrated St. Patrick's Day as they hosted the Oklahoma City Blazers at the festive Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The Rush were coming off an exciting 3-2 win against the Tulsa Oilers but were handed a 3-2 shootout loss by the Blazers.
Oklahoma City didn't waste any time getting on the board as they found the back of the net first at only 0:46 into the period. The goal came from Bill Vandermeer, and was assisted by Chad Hinz and DJ Jelitto. Rapid City dominated the shot column as they outshot the Blazers 18-8. The Rush also had the only two powerplay chances of the period, but weren't able to convert on either of them. The period ended with Oklahoma City maintaining their lead, 1-0.
The second period went much better for the Rush as they were able to take the lead. The first Rush goal was scored by Joey Olson 3:24 into the period. Olson's goal was set up by Derek Legault and Mark DeSantis. The middle frame was a physical one for the squads as there were 26 minutes worth of penalties handed out, including fighting major for Rapid City's Jason Goulet and Oklahoma City's Justin Sawyer. Rapid City would once again find the back of the net as Rich Hansen grabbed a goal at the 11:42 mark. Hansen's goal was assisted by Derek LeBlanc. Rapid City ended the period with the lead, 2-1.
The Blazers were quick to score in the third period as Hinz, who had picked up an assist on the earlier goal, put the puck past Rush goalie, Lanny Ramage at 2:36 into the final frame. Rapid City would outshoot Oklahoma City in the period, 14-10, but neither team would score the rest of the period, leading the two squads into overtime.
The overtime period was a fairly even one for both teams, and even though Rapid City fired off more shots than the Blazers, no goal was tallied which led the teams to a shootout. In the shootout, Simon Lambert would score the game-winner as Oklahoma City picked up the shootout win, 3-2.
Up next for the Rush is a trip to Oklahoma City as the Rush look for revenge on March 17th. The puck will drop at 7:10 CST.
