Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Ohio) The Akron RubberDucks took their first lead of the game by posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Tony Wolters single, helping Akron to a 6-4 victory over the Harrisburg Senators on Thursday evening at Canal Park.
The Senators scored early when an RBI single off the bat of first baseman Kevin Keyes pushed second baseman Cutter Dykstra across the plate after he reached on a walk, giving Harrisburg a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. Harrisburg went on to post a pair of runs in the third, again with Dykstra crossing home after being issued a walk. Dykstra moved to third on a double down the right field line from Washington Nationals rehabber Bryce Harper and eventually scored on a Matt Skole single. Harper came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Keyes. The Senators held a 3-0 lead after their half of the third.
The RubberDucks scored in the third in similar fashion when a sacrifice fly from Tyler Naquin sent Jake Lowery, who reached on a walk, across the plate. Joey Wendle clubbed another sacrifice fly, followed by a Bryan LaHair RBI single to knot the game at 3-3.
In the sixth inning, after Harrisburg left fielder Drew Vettleson reached second on a wild pitch, catcher Brian Jeroloman drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single, handing the Senators the 4-3 edge.
The 'Ducks then took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on Wolters' two-run single, making it 5-4. Jordan Smith extended Akron's lead in the eighth with a one-out RBI single with two runners on. The outfielder has gone 5-for-7 over the past two games.
The win went to Akron reliever Jordan Cooper (6-1) who worked one inning in which he allowed a single hit, struck out one and walked one. Shawn Armstrong was awarded his 11th save on the season after pitching the final inning and allowing two hits.
Akron starter Gabriel Arias worked 5.2 innings in which he allowed four runs off six hits while striking out two. The righty tied his season-high mark of four walked batters.
Harrisburg starter Paolo Espino (3 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO) spent 5.1 innings on the mound. Reliever Derek Self (0-1) absorbed the loss after allowing three hits and two runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Harrisburg and Akron will continue the four-game series at Canal Park on Friday evening at 7:05. RHP Cody Anderson (2-6, 5.21) will start on the mound for the RubberDucks. RHP A.J. Cole (6-3, 2.92) is expected to make the start for the Senators. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
