Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Harrisburg, Pa.) August 3, 2014 - Erik Gonzalez stroked four hits on Sunday, including a two-run triple, as the Akron RubberDucks defeated the Harrisburg Senators, 6-5, in the finale of a four-game series at Metro Bank Park.
The RubberDucks (61-55) avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the Senators (47-66), who had won the first three games of the series, all by one-run margins. On Sunday, it was the RubberDucks turn to prevail in a nail-biter.
After beginning the game at 2:00 p.m. the teams were forced to wait through a 1-hour and 48-minute delay in the seventh inning.
Gonzalez raised his average to .408, with his first AA four-hit game. He extended his hitting streak to 15 games. His two- run triple in the seventh was part of a three run rally that, along with an Anthony Gallas RBI single, gave Akron a 5-1 lead.
After the game resumed in the bottom of the seventh, Harrisburg's Kevin Keyes stroked a two-run single off lefty reliever Giovanni Soto to close the gap to 5-3. In the top of the eighth, Akron's Jake Lowery led off with a solo homer, his third of the year, to make it 6-3, Akron. That run proved pivotal, as Harrisburg scored two more in the eighth to pull to within, 6-5.
With the bases loaded and no one out, Soto fanned three straight hitters to preserve the lead. Shawn Armstrong then worked a perfect ninth for his 12th save.
The win went to Enosil Tejeda (3-1), who tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief after starter Jordan Cooper worked the first 4 2/3 innings.
Gallas went 3-5 on the day. He belted a two-run homer in the first inning off Senators starter Austin Voth (0-2). It was his 11th of the year. Ollie Linton also collected three hits, including a pair of doubles.
After an off-day Monday, the RubberDucks (61-55) will begin a three-game series against New Britain at Canal Park on Tuesday night at 7:05. RHP Duke von Schamann (5-6, 3.92) is the scheduled starter for Akron, while LHP Jason Wheeler (2-3, 3.77) is expected to get the ball for Rock Cats. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and online at www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
