New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats fell to the Erie SeaWolves by the score of 7-1 on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.
Erie took an early 1-0 lead after two innings of play. RF Steven Moya walked to lead off the second frame, moved to third on a double from DH Dean Green and then came home on a 3B Corey Jones groundout to first.
The Rock Cats were faced with their second "bullpen game" in the last three nights as RHP Daniel Turpen started on the hill for the home club. The hard-throwing righty appeared in 30 games so far this season, all out of the bullpen, and was stretched out for three innings before turning the ball over to relief. The third-year Rock Cat allowed just the one run on one hit while walking four and striking out three, falling to 3-2 in the loss.
SeaWolves starter LHP Josh Turley kept the hitters at bay for seven innings, giving up just two hits while walking two and striking out five. His array of pitches, all with great movement, did not provide the Rock Cats offense much to work with. Turley's record improves to 3-1 with the victory.
The visitors increased their lead by two in the top of the sixth, the third inning of work for reliever LHP Jim Fuller. With one out, SeaWolves hitters strung together three consecutive singles, the last of which scored Moya for the second time in the afternoon. Two batters later and the bases full, Fuller walked C Craig Albernaz to bring home DH Dean Green, the seventh walk overall for New Britain pitching at that point.
Back-to-back doubles for CF Jason Krizan and 2B Devon Travis made it a 4-0 game in favor of Erie. The run was charged to RHP Cole Johnson, who gave up the two runs on five hits over two innings of work.
A two-run home run for Moya and solo shot for 3B Corey Jones in the top of the ninth put the game out of reach for the Cats'. RHP Jose Valdez ran into a little trouble closing out the game, giving up an RBI single to CF Eddie Rosario to erase the shutout bid, but ultimately was able to secure the third out and salvage a series split.
Monday will be a travel day for the Rock Cats, as they take to the road to start a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians Double-A affiliate, the Akron RubberDucks. LHP Jason Wheeler will start Tuesday's game in Akron and will be matched up against RHP Duke Von Schamann. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
