Royals Third Period Rally Snuffed By Late Cincinnati Goal, 3-2

Reading, PA - For the second game in a row, the Reading Royals (7 - 9 - 4 = 18; 5th North Division) gave up a late third period power play goal; but, unlike in Johnstown where the Royals at least got a point in the shootout, this time it resulted in a regulation loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones, 3-2. This game actually marked the eighth time this season that Reading has battled back from a deficit to gain a tie or hold a lead during the third period, only to end up losing in regulation or the shootout. In this one, the Royals scored two third period goals against a team that had only given up seven third period goals all season long to tie things at two before the Cyclones' Cory Urquhart scored with 5:44 left to give the Cincinnati the win.

For the ninth consecutive game (and the sixteenth time out of the twenty games played by the Royals this season), Reading gave up the game's first goal, when Cincinnati's Sam Ftorek fed the breaking defenseman Jon Gleed into the offensive zone, and Gleed slipped behind the Royals' defense for a clean break on Reading goaltender Ryan Munce (4 - 6 - 4, 21/24). Gleed went high to the glove side for his first pro goal with just 1:42 remaining in the first. Early in the second, the Cyclones took a 2-0 lead when a failed clear resulted in Cincinnati's Mathieu Aubin taking control in the right wing corner. Aubin fed Jason Deitsch, who slid down the slot and rocketed a one-timer behind Munce 1:30 into the period.

The Royals broke up the shutout bid of Cedric Desjardins (5 - 4 - 0, 32/34) 6:56 into the third period, when Chris Bala broke hard down the left wing side and fired a puck that Desjardins kicked out with the left pad. However, Greg Hogeboom crashed the net and chipped the rebound past Desjardins for his tenth goal of the season. Reading tied things at two 2:02 later, when the Royals were awarded an offensive zone face-off to restart play with their eighth power play of the night. Shawn Collymore won the face-off in the right circle and Hogeboom slipped the puck to Dany Roussin, who was planted on the interior portion of the circle. Roussin powered his way to the center of the slot and took a low hard shot that beat Desjardins to the stick side. Reading was put on their heels late in the third when Ned Lukacevic was assessed a roughing minor that was turned into a four-minute power play for Cincinnati due to an extra unsportsmanlike conduct minor assessed against him in the sequence. On the front end of the double-minor, Cincinnati capitalized with the game winner when Aubin found Cory Urquhart planted in the right circle, and Urquhart ripped a bullet behind Munce at the 14:16 mark of the third. The Royals pressed down the stretch, but all they would get would be a slashing major and a game misconduct assessed against James Hiebert after time had expired, as well as a ten minute misconduct assessed against Reagan Rome after the conclusion of the game.

Reading and Cincinnati go at it again on Friday night (7:05 pm) at the Sovereign Center. It is the "Teddy Bear Toss" Night when fans are invited to bring a stuffed animal and throw it on the ice after the Royals score their first goal of the game. The stuffed animals will be collected and given to the U.S. Marines' Toys for Tots Program. The Royals Booster Club will also be selling Teddy Bears at the game on Friday for only $5.00, with $1.00 of those proceeds going to the Toys for Tots. Royals' game night broadcasts can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1240 am (and on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com), beginning thirty minutes before the opening face-off.
