Victoria Royals News Release
Everett, WA - In a Saturday night tilt at Comcast Arena, the Victoria Royals travelled to Everett to take on the Silvertips for the second of a three-game road trip. Victoria gave Patrik Polivka the start between the pipes while Everett gave the nod to Austin Lotz.
The Silvertips opened the scoring courtesy of Connor Cox's first goal of the year. While on the powerplay, Tyler Sandhu threaded a pass from the left wall to an open Cox who was alone at the far post for a tap-in marker at 6:25. Everett extended their lead at 12:58. Off of a face-off to the right of Polivka, Soumelidis feathered a quick backhand shot that fooled the Victoria netminder and gave the Silvertips a 2-0 lead. The Royals cut the lead in half just over one minute later with a powerplay marker from Tim Traber. From the left point, Brett Cote fired a slapshot on net that was deflected out of mid-air by Traber and past Lotz. Former Silvertip Trent Lofthouse then drew Victoria even to at the 18 minute mark with an end-to-end rush. After collecting the puck deep in the Victoria zone, the 18-year-old rushed the puck up the middle of the ice and danced between two Everett defenders. Lofthouse made a move to his backhand and buried the puck past the Silvertips' goaltender for his second goal in as many games. The Royals added a third unanswered goal before the end of the period. On a three-on-two rush Brandon Magee fired a quick pass to the post that found the stick of Cote who deflected the puck past Lotz at 19:08. Victoria held a 3-2 advantage after 20 minutes of play.
Everett knotted the game at three goals apiece 1:51 into the second period. Silvertips' forward Reid Petryk entered the Victoria zone on the right wing and fed a pass across the slot to Kohl Bauml who fired the puck over the outstretched leg of the Royals' netminder. The Silvertips regained the lead at the 3:28 mark of the frame. Defenceman Cole MacDonald hammered a shot from the left point that was deflected in front and eluded a screened Polivka. Everett increased their lead on a powerplay tally with six seconds remaining in the middle period. Off of an Everett rush, Ty Mappin threaded a backhand pass from the left wing to Joshua Winquist at the far post. Winquist finished the play with a one-time that beat Polivka high glove side. Everett took a 5-3 lead into the second intermission.
Austin Carroll pulled the Royals to within one goal with just over four minutes to play in the third period. After he collected a loose puck in the corner to the right of Silvertips' goalie Carroll cut hard to the front of the net and fired a low shot past the Everett goalie's blocker. Victoria's comeback would fall short despite a late push and the Silvertips added two empty-net goals to seal the victory. Everett 7 Victoria 4.
Victoria went 1/4 25.0% on the powerplay while Everett was 2/3 66.6%. The Silvertips outshot the Royals 33-32.
The Royals now travel to Seattle to take on the Thunderbirds tomorrow night before heading home to host the Kamloops Blazers on Tuesday, January 15th at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
