August 31, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals, affiliates of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and AHL's Manchester Monarchs, have agreed to terms on one-year contracts with defenseman Tom Galvin and forward D'Arcy McConvey. With the two signings, the Royals will have seven rookies in training camp to start the season.
Galvin, 24, joins the Royals after a successful four-year career at the University of Notre Dame. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound New York native was a leader on the Irish blueline leading Notre Dame to their most successful season in 2003-04, an NCAA hockey tournament appearance. Galvin's best season came in 2001-02 as a sophomore when he racked up four goals and 23 points in 38 games to lead all Irish D-men. After the Irish were knocked out of the NCAA tournament by fourth-ranked Minnesota, Galvin appeared in two regular season professional games with Atlantic City of the ECHL and recorded one goal. He also appeared in three playoff games and chipped in two assists.
"Tom is a tough, intelligent defenseman with gifted hands. He makes up for his size on the blueline with good decision-making skills and he is solid on his skates as well," commented coach Derek Clancey.
The other Central Collegiate Hockey Association standout coming to terms with the Royals is forward D'Arcy McConvey. McConvey suited up for 38 contests in his senior campaign for the brown and orange Bowling Green State University Falcons posting 10 goals and 25 points to lead the club. He finished tied for second in goals scored (10) and tied for first in assists (25). The Richmond Hill, Ontario native captained BGSU in both his junior and senior seasons, while also leading the Falcons in scoring in both seasons. In addition, the 5-foot-9, 187-pounder was named to the CCHA All-Academic Team in his junior and senior campaigns. McConvey finished his career at BG by appearing in 153 straight games.
Royals general manager Ray Delia is excited about the latest Royals rookies, "Both players are coming off excellent college careers at fantastic Universities. We expect each player to provide positive contributions to this program this year!"
To date, the Royals have come to terms with 14 players for the 2004-05 season. Rookie signees are defensemen Simon Mangos, Frederic Belanger, Andrew Nahirniak, Matthew Medley, Galvin and left wing Colt King along with McConvey. Royals returnees from last season's Northern Division Championship squad include: Defensemen Ian Turner, Dean Arsene and Reagan Rome along with forwards Peter Hay, David Masse, Judd Medak and leading scorer Graig Mischler.
The Reading Royals are entering their fourth season in Reading, Pennsylvania after relocating from Columbus, Ohio. The Royals enjoyed their first Kelly Cup playoff appearance last season, claiming the Northern Division Title and were one win away from qualifying for the Kelly Cup Finals.
