OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals are pleased to announce the creation of the Royals-Robinson Athletic Scholarship. The Royals will be awarding a $500 scholarship this season to one male, African-American high school baseball player. The scholarship is in honor of Jackie Robinson, who turned the tide of segregation in America when he broke Major League Baseball's long-standing "color barrier" on April 15, 1947 and went on to be named the National League Rookie of the Year that season.
To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, the student-athlete must reside in Douglas, Sarpy or Pottawattamie County and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. They must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and must also be a high school senior or graduate planning to enroll full-time at an accredited post-secondary institution.
The recipient of the scholarship must demonstrate several qualities, including athletic achievement, scholarship in the classroom, community involvement and integrity.
"We are excited to offer an opportunity to deserving area high school student-athletes," said Royals General Manager Martie Cordaro. "This is just one way we can help honor the legacy left by Jackie Robinson."
To apply students must provide a current, complete transcript of grades, plus a letter of support from a current supervising principal, coach or guidance counselor. They must also include a written statement of 500 words or less on how and why sports - specifically baseball - have been important in their life.
Students should send their application to Lesley Crutcher, Omaha Royals Director of Community Relations, 1202 Bert Murphy Avenue, Omaha, NE 68107 or email it to lesley.crutcher@oroyals.com.
Applications are due by Saturday, April 19th. The scholarship winner will be notified the first week in May. An award ceremony will take place at Rosenblatt Stadium on Friday, May 9th, prior to the Royals 7:05 p.m. game vs. Portland.
For more information, call Crutcher at (402) 738-5109.
The Royals 2008 season opener is set for Rosenblatt Stadium on Thursday, April 3rd at 7:05 p.m. vs. the Albuquerque Isotopes. For tickets, call the Royals ticket office at (402) 738-5100, or order and print tickets online at www.oroyals.com and at www.Etix.com.
