Royals Rally Late to Down Redbirds

Memphis, Tenn. - Omaha used a ninth inning rally to down Memphis 5-1 Friday night at AutoZone Park.

Matt Tupman delivered the big hit for the Royals with a two-out double that scored two runs to put Omaha in the lead. One batter later Chris Lubanski hit a towering shot to right field to cap the four-run rally with his second dinger of the season. Mike Aviles led the O-Royals with a pair of hits while Craig Brazell added to his minor league leading total with a solo shot in the second inning. Jarrett Hoffpauir knocked in the ‘Birds lone run with a single in the fourth, and Mike Ferris contributed the Redbirds only other hit with a single in the fifth inning.

Memphis starter Mike Smith was the tough-luck loser after giving up two runs on three hits in 8.1 innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked one in the loss. Neal Musser picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief work. Royals starter Ben Hendrickson tossed seven strong innings giving up one run on two hits with five strikeouts.

The ‘Birds will send Randy Keisler to the bump tomorrow night as AutoZone Park hosts Elvis Night. Former University of Tennessee standout and No. 1 pick Luke Hochevar will get the ball for the O-Royals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
