Portland Beavers News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Nick Gorneault hit a tie-breaking, three-run home run to lead the Salt Lake Bees to a come-from-behind 7-4 victory over the Portland Beavers at Franklin Covey Field Friday night.
Rich Thompson (2-0) retired all four batters he faced in relief to earn the victory for the Bees, who have won four of their last five games at home.
Aaron Rakers (3-4) pitched one inning, allowing four runs to take the loss for the Beavers. Portland (49-71) has dropped ten of their last twelve games on the road.
Portland rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh inning with three runs, scoring on an RBI single from Keoni Ruth, an RBI groundout from Craig Stansberry and a run-scoring triple from Peter Ciofrone off Salt Lake reliever Matt Wilhite to take a 3-2 lead.
Salt Lake (62-57) reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame with four straight hits off Rakers, who had come on for Beavers' starter Clay Hensley, capped by Gorneault's three-run clout to left field that gave the Bees a 6-3 advantage.
After Salt Lake added a run in the eighth, the Beavers' put the tying run on deck in the ninth inning with two outs, but could only bring one run across against Marcus Gwyn.
Stansberry drove in a pair of runs for Portland, while Ciofrone and Luke Carlin each added two hits in the loss.
Casey Smith and Bobby Wilson each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Salt Lake.
The second game of the four-games series is Saturday. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: On Friday, the San Diego Padres purchased the contract of pitcher Jack Cassel and recalled pitcher Joe Thatcher from Portland ... Cassel made his major league debut Friday night in Cincinnati, coming on in relief and allowing two runs in three innings, but did not factor in the decision ... Additionally, the Beavers reinstated outfielder Paul McAnulty from the disabled list and placed pitcher Mike Thompson on the active roster (optioned Aug. 7) ... in the last two years, the Beavers have dropped seven of eight series openers against the Bees ... Ruth, a 22nd-round selection of the Padres in this June's draft, has 25 RBIs in 32 professional games between four levels of San Diego's minor league system.
