Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Royals would like to congratulate forward Matthew Phillips on being named to the Western Conference First All-Star Team for the 2017-18 WHL Regular Season.
This season, his third in the WHL, Phillips led the Royals in multiple offensive categories that included points (112), goals (48), assists (64), powerplay points (44), powerplay goals (17) and shorthanded goals (5). Phillips became the first Royal in team history to reach the 100-point milestone and set the Victoria/Chilliwack franchise record for most points in a single season.
The 5-7, 155 lb Phillips' 112 points (48g-64a) led all Western Conference players in scoring and was the fifth highest total in the league. Phillips also finished fifth in the WHL in goals (48) and sixth in assists (64), while he was tied for second in the league with five shorthanded markers. This is the second consecutive season that Phillips has been named to the Western Conference First All-Star Team. He also was a member of Team WHL at the CIBC Canada Russia Series, in November, where he collected a goal in two games.
A native of Calgary, AB, Phillips was signed by his hometown Calgary Flames, of the NHL, to a three-year entry level contract back in December. He was originally drafted by the Flames in the sixth round, 166th overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Victoria will kick off the 2018 WHL Playoffs at home against the Vancouver Giants this Friday and Saturday night for Games 1 & 2 of their first round match-up. Puck drop for both games is at 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Select Your Tickets Box Office, over the phone by calling 250-220-7889 or by visiting www.selectyourtickets.com.
