Cal Foote Named Top Defenceman in Western Conference

The Western Hockey League announced today Eastern and Western Conference individual award winners for the 2017-18 WHL season.

Included on the awards list was Kelowna Rockets Captain Cal Foote. Foote was named the Top Defenceman in the Western Conference, and is now eligible to win the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy. The Tampa Bay Lightning prospect from Engelwood, CO. led the Rockets D-core in goals, assists, and points. In 60 games this season, Foote more than doubled his goal total from the previous two seasons combined, scoring 19 goals, while tying a career high in assists with 51, to set a new career high in points with 70. The 6'4 blueliners 70 points not only led the Rockets defence, but was sixth in league scoring for defenceman. His 19 goals put him fourth in league goal scoring by defenceman, first in team scoring for defenceman, and 19 made put him sixth highest in goal scoring on the Rockets roster. Not only was Foote counted on as one of Kelowna's key offensive producers, he kept the puck out of his own net as well, finishing with an impressive +31 plus/minus rating. Foote logged massive minutes for the Rockets all season, excelling in every situation. Not only did he perform for Kelowna, Foote won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, NY. He was also a part of Team WHL in the CIBC Canada/Russia Series. Foote will now be eligible for the overall league awards at the 2018 WHL Awards luncheon in Red Deer, AB. on Wednesday, May 2nd. The only player in Kelowna Rockets history to win the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the Top Defenceman in the WHL was Tyson Barrie during the 2009-2010 season. That season Barrie had 19 goals and 53 assists for 72 points in 63 games played. Rockets Head Coach Jason Smith also won the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy playing for the Regina Pats during the 1992-1993 season. In 64 games that year, Smith had 14 goals and 52 assists for 66 points in 64 games.

All individual WHL Conference Award winners will be eligible for the overall league awards at the 2018 WHL Awards luncheon in Red Deer, Alta., on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.WHL Conference Awards are voted upon by all WHL General Managers and Head Coaches.
