TONIGHT: The Royals visit PGE Park, facing the Portland Beavers in a 9:05 p.m. game. It's game 3 of a 4-game series. Omaha is 2-0 in the series and 4-2 on the road trip. Air-time is 8:45 p.m. on News Talk 1420 KOTK and at www.Oroyals.com.

SUNDAY: Trailing 2-1 entering the 4th inning, the Royals scored 4 unearned runs and went on to an 8-2 victory. With 2 outs in the 4th, Mike Aviles stole 3rd base and scored on a throwing error by Portland catcher Pete Laforest. Another miscue by Beavers right fielder Vincent Sinisi allowed Justin Huber to score the go-ahead run. Fernando Cortez capped the rally with a 2-run double. Aviles and Joey Gathright each had 3 hits on the day to pace Omaha's 14-hit attack. Nate Hoelscher (2-0) picked up the win with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Thad Markray retired 4 of the 5 batters he faced to notch his 1st save. Portland starter Jack Cassel (4-5) took the loss, after giving up 6 runs - 2 earned - on 10 hits over 6.0 stanzas.

ROYALS REPORT: Aviles scored 3 runs and drove 1 home Sunday. His 3-hit game was his 5th of the season and his club-leading 24th multi-hit contest. Aviles leads the PCL with 73 hits. He leads the team with 13 doubles after collecting 2 more yesterday. *** The Royals have won 4 straight on the road, after winning just 4 times in their 1st 21 road games this season. Omaha's longest overall win string this season is 5. It came May 21-25, with all 5 wins coming at Rosenblatt Stadium. *** In his last 3 relief appearances, Hoelscher is 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA, allowing just 1 earned run in 9.2 innings of work. *** Gathright's 3 hits Sunday give him a .403 batting average (25-62) over the past 16 games. He has scored 14 runs and has 7 RBI during that stretch. The speedy leadoff batter, who picked up his PCL-leading 20th stolen base yesterday, is 12-for-12 in steal attempts over that 16-game span. Gathright also walked twice more on Sunday; his 37 walks are tied for most in the league. *** Craig Brazell doubled twice in 5 at-bats yesterday. Brazell is 3-for-9 with 3 doubles in the 1st 2 games of this series. In the 7 games prior to the Royals arriving in Portland, he was in a 4-for-31 (.129) funk, with 3 of those 4 hits being singles. Brazell has not hit a home run over the past 9 contests, on the heels of a 5-game stretch when he drilled 8 long balls. *** Huber was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored Sunday. In 4 games back, after missing more than 3 weeks with a hamstring injury, Huber is 4-for-14 (.286) with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. *** Mitch Maier has put together a 5-game hitting streak and has hit in 9 of the last 10 tilts in which he's had an at-bat, driving in 9 runs over that stretch.

The 30-year old right-hander's last outing was in relief last Tuesday at Tacoma, when he took the loss in a 7-5 defeat. Shiell is 0-1 with a 2.87 ERA in his 3 starts, while going 0-1 with a 3.20 ERA and 2 saves as a reliever. He was signed by KC as a minor league free agent last November. In 2006, Shiell made 9 starts for Somerset in the Independent Atlantic League, going 3-2 with a 2.92 ERA. He was signed by the Atlanta Braves as a minor league free agent on June 22 and was sent to Triple-A Richmond, where he was 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 9 starts. He also made 4 appearances, including 3 starts, for Atlanta, going 0-2 with an 8.62 ERA. Shiell missed the entire 2004 and 2005 seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Besides Atlanta, Shiell has pitched in the Major Leagues with Boston (2003) and San Diego (2002). He picked up his 1st Major League win as a member of the Red Sox vs. KC on May 1, 2003.
