Royals Game Day: Royals at Manchester | Reading Seeks Third Straight Win

November 3, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Manchester, NH - The Reading Royals (4-1-1-2, 11 pts., 3rd North), proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, have won consecutive games and travel to Manchester for the second time this season to oppose the Manchester Monarchs (4-3-1-1, 10 pts., 4th North) Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Friday, the Royals and Mariners traded goals in the final two minutes and Reading defeated Maine, 4-3, in the shootout. Michael Huntebrinker provided Reading a go-ahead goal with 1:41 left and finished with two points. Maine's Terrance Wallin tied the contest one minute later. Frank DiChiara and Steve Johnson also scored. Reading is 2-0-0-1 on the road this season.

Reading earned a point in a 4-3 shootout loss at Manchester Oct. 20. The North Division foes play nine times this season.

Following today's matchup, the Royals host the Maine Wed., Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Santander Arena, featuring a postgame player autograph session, presented by Rieck's Printing.

Another come-from-behind win

Reading allowed the first goal Friday and came from behind to defeat the Mariners, 4-3. All four of Reading's win have been in come-from-behind fashion. Coincidentally, the Royals have also led in every game this season. After surrendering the first strike, the Royals scored the next two and took a 2-1 edge.

Reading came from behind to win 11 times last season.

The Royals are seeking their first win when scoring the first goal. Reading is 0-1-1-1 when tallying first.

Schmidt in the shootout, Komm finishes the deal

Adam Schmidt scored a game-winning, top-shelf goal in the third round of the shootout, his first ECHL shootout goal. Last season, Schmidt only had one shootout attempt and failed to score.

Branden Komm earned his second career Royals shootout win. He has a career save percentage of .770 in the shootout over 35 attempts. The Royals are 1-2 in shootouts this season.

Unbalanced season series

Similar to last season's series vs. Manchester, 2018-19 features an "unbalanced" nine games between the squads. Reading is at Manchester for the first five season-series matchups and then hosts the Monarchs for three of the final four games.

Additionally, Reading has six separate road trips to Manchester throughout this season and the teams do not play any back-to-backs in New Hampshire. By contrast, the Monarchs come to the Royals for a back-to-back at Santander Arena Feb. 2-3 and also visit Jan. 16.

First series matchup: Oct. 20

The Royals came back from a pair of one-goal deficits to tie but allowed a tying goal to Tony Cameranesi in the third period and dropped in the skills competition, 4-3. Playing in his first game in 514 days, Manchester forward Gasper Kopitar scored the shootout's only goal in the second round.

The Royals and Monarchs were tied, 2-2, at the end of the first period thanks to four combined goals in a 6:57 span. Dan Milan (1g, 1a) and Steven Swavely (1g, 1a) provided the markers and Swavely tied the game with 1:44 left in the first.

Milan registered his second career multi-goal game. His defensive partner Nick Luukko scored for the second straight contest.

Scouting Manchester

In his first Monarchs start, Brandon Wildung allowed an overtime goal to Josh Kestner and Manchester fell in sudden death, 4-3, to Newfoundland Friday at SNHU Arena. Manchester signed Wildung Friday. The team released netminder Will King before the game. Goalie Cole Kehler was placed on injured reserve Wednesday and Charles Williams was loaned to Ontario by Manchester Thursday.

Tony Cameranesi was held scoreless Friday, keeping him at a team-leading seven goals on the campaign. It was the first time he was held pointless in a game this season.

Nick Moutrey is second on the team with 11 points (3g) and tops the Monarchs with eight assists. A former 2016 Calder Cup Champion with Cleveland, Moutrey has four multi-point games this season, tied with Cameranesi for most on the squad.
