Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Kansas City Mavericks (5-1-1-0) won their second-straight overtime decision, a 5-4 win over Utah (4-1-3-0) Saturday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.

For the second-straight night the visitors struck first, this time Caleb Herbert lighting the lamp to take a 1-0 edge just 3:49 into the game. C.J. Eick responded for Kansas City against his former team, scoring his first of the season at 18:45 of the first to pull the Mavericks back even.

Utah again got the scoring going in the second, the top-ranked power play unit in the ECHL coming through as Austin Carroll gave the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead. The score was the first of a flurry of goals in a four-minute span, the Mavs scoring back-to-back over 1:01 - markers from Matt Robertson and Jared VanWormer - to give Kansas City its first lead of the game.

That lead lasted all of 29 seconds as Taylor Richart netted his first of the season 8:17 into the second to produce a 3-3 tie, a stalemate that lasted through the end of the period.

The teams traded goals early in the third, Jake Marchment scoring first for Utah before Greg Betzold knotted the game at four goals apiece with 12:33 remaining.

For the second-straight night, the game went to overtime, and for the second-straight night it was Mark Cooper who found the back of the net for the game-winner to seal the win.

The Mavericks return to action on Tuesday as they host Mountain Division foe Allen at 7:05 p.m.
