Reading Royals News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- The Reading Royals of the ECHL (1-1), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, defeated the Kalamazoo Wings, 4-1, in Game Two of the American Conference Quarter Final Series at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Royals took an early lead and built a four goal lead through two periods before the K-Wings broke through for one in the third. Reading's win evened the best-of-five first round series at one game apiece. Goaltender Matt Dalton (win, 1-1-; 34/35) earned the second star in picking up his first pro playoff win. Kalamazoo's Ryan Nie (loss, 1-1; 13/17; 40:00) started and played the first forty minutes in sustaining his first loss in six starts against the Royals this season. The K-Wings' Riley Gill (no decision, 7/7; 20:00) made all of the stops he was called upon to make in the final period. The Royals scored on the team's first two power play opportunities (2-5); while the Royals penalty killers kept the Kalamazoo power play off the board for the second straight game (0-5).
Reading struck 2:10 into the game on the team's first chance with the man advantage. Ryan Cruthers, who would pick up three assists in the game, found Aaron Brocklehurst low in the right circle for an open opportunity. Nie got a chunk of Brocklehurst's shot, but Olivier Labelle stepped in to punch the loose puck home for his first of the playoff season. Reading took a 2-0 lead at the 15:40 mark of the first, when Marc Cavosie forced his way to the top of the crease for a multi-shot chance, which ended when he forced the puck over the goal line for his first of the playoff season.
The Royals extended the team's lead to 3-0 at the 8:39 mark of the second while on the power play, when Daniel Steiner scored his second of the playoff season. Steiner walked off the left half wall to the top of the left circle where he ripped a snap shot high glove side that caught the perfect spot inside the bar and post. Reading stretched the lead to 4-0 with 47.3 seconds left in the second period when Todd Perry fired a shot from the high slot that Labelle, who was planted at the top of the crease, deflected into the low left corner for his second of the game.
The K-Wings broke through 2:10 into the third when Ben Simon took control along the goal line to the left side of the Royals' net. Simon's sharp-angle shot hit the far bar then ricocheted into the upper portion of the net for his second of the playoff season. Kalamazoo continued to press in what proved to be a messy and penalty-filled third period, but the Royals held on for the team's first win ever in Kalamazoo.
The Royals and K-Wings head to Reading, Pennsylvania for Game Three of the American Conference Quarter-Final Series on Friday (Wednesday, April 9 @ 7:05 pm) at the Sovereign Center. The Royals game night broadcast on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast will begin at 6:35 pm.
