Salmon Kings Take Game 1 from Condors

Victoria, BC - In a Wednesday night matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met in Game 1 of their National Conference Quarterfinal Series at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria's Matt Keetley got the start in net while Bakersfield countered with Jean-Philippe Levasseur.

Victoria opened the scoring just 49 seconds after puck drop. Chad Painchaud outraced a Condors' defenseman for the loose puck into the offensive zone down the left-wing and fired a shot between the pads of Levasseur. The Condors knotted the game at 1-1 at the18:40 mark. Off a turnover, Ryan Menei fed a breakaway pass to a wide-open Stephane Goulet who made a forehand to backhand move to put the puck past the blocker of Keetley. The teams skated into the intermission deadlocked at 1-1.

The Salmon Kings would retake the lead at the 2:09 mark of the middle frame. While on a 3-on-2 Kris Fredheim released a shot from the slot that was stopped by the right pad of Levasseur with Dirk Southern burying the rebound past the Condor netminder. Victoria extended their lead to 3-1 at the 4:26 during a power play. After a scramble in front of the net, Goldie pounced on the puck and while falling down shot the puck up and over the blocker of Levasseur. Bakersfield made it a one goal game at the 8:15 mark on Goulet's second goal of the evening. The Condor forward skated into the offensive zone and wired a wrist shot from the slot past the glove of Keetley. The visiting team tied the game at 3-3 just 23 seconds later. Scott Marchesi jammed at the loose puck in front of the net with the puck sliding under the right pad of the Salmon Kings' goaltender. Victoria took a 4-3 advantage with 56 seconds remaining in the period on Goldie's second goal of the night. Andy Brandt deflected a pass at the offensive blue line to Goldie who picked up the loose puck, streaked down the right-wing and fired a shot between the legs of Levasseur in close. After 40 minutes of play the Salmon Kings led the Condors 4-3.

Victoria went ahead by a 5-3 score on an Olivier Filion marker at 12:05 of the final period. Goldie's wrap-around attempt banked in off the skate of Filion and past the goaltender. Painchaud netted an empty-net goal at 18:09 to round out the scoring for the game. Salmon Kings 6 Condors 3. Victoria leads the Best-of-5 National Conference Quarterfinals 1-0.

Victoria went 1/4 = 25.0% on the power play while Bakersfield was 0/2 = 0.0%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Condors 29-28.

The Salmon Kings continue their playoff series with Game 2 against the Condors, tomorrow night. Puck drop for the game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria heads to Bakersfield for games 3, 4, and 5 on Saturday April 10th, Sunday April 11th, and Monday April 12th, with games 4, and 5 if necessary.
