Reading Royals News Release

The Reading Royals downed the Peoria Rivermen in Carver Arena 2-1 in overtime despite being held to a season low in shots on goal (18). After a scoreless first period, the Royals captain Brad Church got the Reading on the scoreboard in the second. Church took an outlet pass from goaltender Cody Rudkowsky and went the length of the ice to beat Levente Szuper to put Reading up 1-0 midway through the game. It was Church's fifth goal of the season and third power play tally of the season. Peoria came back just 24-seconds into the third period as ex-Royal Alex Kim tallied his third goal of the season and sixth point to tie the game at 1-1. Linemates Bret DeCecco and Josh Kern picked up the assists. The game would end in regulation in a 1-1 tie. In the overtime, Darryl Laplante won a face-off in the Royals zone and Jeff Finger worked the puck up to Leon Hayward, who got behind the Rivermen defense, to notch his second goal of the season in just his third game. The goal was the first game winner for Hayward in 2003-04. Royals netminder Cody Rudkowsky was sparkling in net for Reading stopping 28 Rivermen offerings. Levente Szuper made 16 saves for Peoria in the loss. Peoria outshot Reading 29-17 in the game while Reading went 1-2 on the power play and the Rivermen were 0-4. The Royals and Rivermen meet tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. ET.
