Victoria, BC - In a Tuesday night matchup at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre the Victoria Royals took on the Tri-City Americans in the first game of a two game set. The Royals gave Keith Hamilton the start in goal, while the Americans went with Ty Rimmer.
The Royals looked to start the game strong as they recorded three quality shots on Rimmer in the first minute of the game. The Americans looked to respond to Victoria's strong start and were rewarded with the first goal on the night. From behind the net Malte Stromwall fed Mason Wilgosh in the slot. Wilgosh quickly snapped the puck past Hamilton at 6:52 to give Tri-City a 1-0 lead. After back-to-back Victoria penalties, the Americans' went on a 5-on-3 man advantage and were able to put their second past Hamilton at 9:27. From the right corner Patrick Holland made a cross ice pass to Justin Feser who wristed the puck into the net. Victoria looked to cut into the Tri-City lead with two minutes left in the first. Austin Carroll wheeled around the left corner and fed Zane Jones in the slot. The Royals' forward released a quick shot on net that beat an outstretched Rimmer. The marker was scored at 18:37 and was Jones' sixth of the season. Victoria trailed 2-1 after one period, but held a 14-8 lead in shots.
Tri-City re-established their two goal lead at 4:02 on their second power play marker. Feser gave Brendan Shinnimin the puck in the neutral zone as the forward burst into the Victoria zone. Shinnimin cut towards the net and shoveled the puck between the legs of Hamilton. After the goal Jared Rathjen replaced Hamilton in the Royals' net. The Americans added two more markers before the period ended. Tyson Dallman would score on a rebound and Feser would add his second goal of the game late in the period. The Americans led 5-1 after 40 minutes.
The Royals got their second goal past Rimmer at 2:07 off a power-play opportunity. Brandon Magee received a pass in the slot, but had his shot miss the net. The puck rebounded off the glass back into the slot where Robin Soudek converted his 17th marker of the season past the Americans' goaltender. Just over a minute later Carroll was sent in on a partial breakaway. The Victoria rookie snapped a quick shot on net that rang off the left post and into the corner. That was as close as the Royals would get as Shinnimin added another late marker for Tri-City. Americans 6 Royals 2.
Victoria went 1/7 14.3% on the power play, while Tri-City was 2/6 33.3%. The Royals outshot the Americans 32-27.
The Royals finish their two game set with the Americans tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Victoria will then welcome the Lethbridge Hurricanes to town on Friday, December 9th.
