Everett Silvertips News Release
KAMLOOPS, BC - The Kamloops Blazers scored five powerplay goals and added another shorthanded score to defeat the Everett Silvertips 6-1 Wednesday night at the Interior Savings Centre. The Silvertips have now lost a season-high seven straight games heading into a weekend home set against Spokane and Tri-City.
Evan Morden notched the Silvertips' only goal, which was also on the powerplay as all seven goals in the game came on special teams. Kamloops finished 5 for 8 on the powerplay, while the 'Tips scored once in five chances of their own.
Things started off poorly for Everett as Josh Birkholz was issued a five-minute major penalty for checking to the head only 2:30 into the game. Kamloops scored twice on the ensuing powerplay, with Dylan Willick and Austin Madaisky making it an early 2-0 lead for the home team. The 'Tips then got their first powerplay later in the period, but it was the Blazers' Brendan Ranford who would steal the puck in the offensive zone and score shorthanded to make it 3-0. The Silvertips couldn't manage a goal during a minute-long 5-on-3 chance right after that, but Evan Morden's long wrist shot through traffic found the back of the net with one second left in the powerplay, getting Everett on the board at 3-1 through 20 minutes.
The Silvertips had three more powerplay chances to start the second and outshot the Blazers 11-6 in the frame, but couldn't beat Cole Cheveldave to draw closer on the scoreboard. Kamloops capitalized on its lone man-advantage of the period however, as Willick deposited his second goal of the night to put Everett's deficit at 4-1 through 40 minutes.
The Blazers notched their final two powerplay tallies in the third period, with Colin Smith scoring at 14:30 and then Ranford getting his second of the night to close the scoring just over two minutes later. Austin Lotz (1-5-0-1) stopped 23 shots in the loss, while Cole Cheveldave (13-3-1-0) totaled 29 saves. Everett outshot Kamloops 30-29 in the contest.
Everett will now return home for a pair of U.S. Division games this weekend at Comcast Arena, Friday night against the Spokane Chiefs at 7:35 pm and Saturday night vs. the Tri-City Americans at 7:05 pm. Group tickets and mini-game packages for the 2011-2012 regular season can be purchased in person at the team office inside at Comcast Arena or by phone at 425-252-5100. Single game tickets are on sale by phone (866-332-8449), online (comcastarenaeverett.com) or at the Comcast Arena box office.
