Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (20-9-2-1) fell 4-3 in overtime in Prince George Wednesday in their second game in as many nights against the Cougars (10-19-0-2).
The Winterhawks dominated the Cougars in the first period, outshooting them 17-3, but Prince George netminder Drew Owsley turned away each Portland chance as the two teams went scoreless in the opening frame.
The Cougars opened the scoring 1:26 into the second on a goal by Joshua Smith, but Portland tied the game at 1-1 at the 6:34 mark on the 19th goal of the season from Brad Ross. Prince George regained the lead at the 12:14 mark when Chase Witala scored to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead, then extended it to 3-1 at the 16:20 mark on a goal by Greg Fraser.
The Hawks got one back at the 18:48 mark on a shorthanded goal by Ty Rattie, his league-leading 32nd of the season, to cut the Cougars' lead to 3-2 going into the third period.
Portland then tied the game 4:13 into the third when rookie Nic Petan scored his seventh goal of the season to even the game at 3-3. The Hawks nearly tripled Prince George's shot total in the third with a 14-5 advantage, but the game remained tied through regulation, setting up overtime.
The Cougars then got the winner 2:55 into the extra frame on the second goal of the night from Fraser.
Rattie and Bartschi both extended their point streaks to eight games apiece tonight.
Portland had rookie Brendan Burke in net, who made 20 saves on 24 shots. Owsley finished with 39 saves on 42 Portland shots.
The Winterhawks continue their road trip with a gamer Friday night in Vancouver against the Giants.
