Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, B.C. - The Victoria Royals are excited to announce a partnership with the Moose Hide Campaign ahead of Indigenous Culture Celebration Night presented by RE/MAX at their next home game on Friday, Feb. 17.
The Moose Hide Campaign is an Indigenous-led grassroots movement working to end violence towards women and children in communities across Canada.
"We see this as a long-term partnership," said Raven Lacerte, Co-Founder of the organization. "The Royals have been very supportive in bringing a diverse group of people together to take a stand against gender-based violence in our country."
The Campaign was started over 10 years ago by Lacerte and her father Paul along the Highway of Tears in Northern BC, and has since grown into a nationwide movement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, with thousands of communities joining the annual Moose Hide Campaign Day ceremony and fast, which will be held this year on May 11.
Earlier this month, Royals staff and players got a chance to learn more about the realities of women and child abuse in Canada in a training and information session hosted by the Moose Hide organization.
Education remains a key part of the Campaign's message:
"Our target audience is young men," said Lacerte. "What we want is to bring young men into the space to try to help solve the issue...What better role models for young men than hockey players, because hockey is such a key piece of our culture...The training session was a very positive experience."
In support of their new partnership with Moose Hide, the Royals will be wearing special stickers on their helmets during Friday's game. Additionally, the team has pledged to donate all proceeds from Friday's 50/50 to the campaign.
The Royals are proud to provide an elevated platform for their cause:
"We are honoured to be partnered with the Moose Hide Campaign," said Royals General Manager and Head Coach Dan Price. "The work of the Campaign is extremely important in educating people, including our team, about the importance of standing up against violence towards women and children. We are grateful for the session the Moose Hide Campaign organized for our players and staff. This is the first step in a partnership with the Moose Hide Campaign focusing on this very important work, that we look forward to continuing in the future."
The night will also feature presentations by representatives of the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations as well as an Indigenous vendor fair on the concourse at gate one.
The Royals Indigenous cultural celebration runs in conjunction with league-wide initiatives such as the Orange Jersey Project, which will see WHL teams wear orange jerseys during warm up throughout the month of February in support of the Orange Shirt Society, which works to strengthen the path toward truth and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples across Canada.
The game is set to begin at 7:05 pm on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Downtown Victoria.
