February 13, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Winterhawks wrapped up three points in three games last week as they continue to push for a U.S. Division title. On Tuesday, the Hawks scored twice late in a rousing comeback effort against Red Deer that ended in a tough shootout loss, then they topped Tri-City in Kennewick for their first win at Toyota Center this season. Saturday was the main event, a playoff-style neck-and-neck tilt with Seattle where Portland couldn't get a bounce in a 3-0 defeat.

This week, the team begins a two-week road trip with stops in Spokane and Kelowna on Wednesday and Saturday before continuing to Prince George to open the following week.

Hot Hawks:

Forward Marcus Nguyen led Portland with five points (2G, 3A) in three games last week, logging an assist on Tuesday followed by his first career four-point outing to lead the Hawks to a 6-3 win on Friday.

Forward Gabe Klassen notched an assist on Tuesday, then tallied his team-leading 29th goal of the season in Kennewick on Friday - plus another helper. With three points last week, the Hawks' captain has two goals and three assists in his last four games.

Forward James Stefan bounced back from a brief scoreless skid with goals in back-to-back games last week, scoring on Tuesday and Friday. The Laguna Beach, Calif. native is up to 20 goals and 37 assists on the year, good for a share of the team scoring lead.

Forward Jack O'Brien put his playmaking ability on display with four assists in last week's action, including his third three-point performance of the season. Through 50 games this season, O'Brien is tied with Luca Cagnoni for the team lead with 38 helpers.

Defenseman Luca Cagnoni tallied his 13th goal of the year against Red Deer on Tuesday, tying him with Lukas Dragicevic for fifth among WHL blueliners in that category. The 2023 NHL Draft prospect also chipped in his team-leading 37th and 38th assists.

Play of the Week:

The Winterhawks are making a habit of these incredible comebacks - the latest in a season-long series of "never say die" moments came on Tuesday as Kyle Chyzowski capped off a two-goal revival in the third period to help the Hawks snag a point against the Rebels.
