Royals - and Casey - win in a landslide

April 17, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA – The Royals picked up their first home victory and the club's mascot was "elected" Mayor of Omaha Sunday at Rosenblatt Stadium. Both results turned out to be fairly lopsided. The Royals defeated Round Rock 10-4, scoring six runs in the sixth inning to blow open a close contest.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the third, the Royals scored four runs off Ezequiel Astacio (0-2). Adrian Brown tied the game with the first of his two RBI singles on the day. Matt Diaz followed by bashing a three-run homer to left field. It was the third home run of the season for the Royals left fielder – all coming against Round Rock – and extended his hitting streak to eight games.

D.J. Carrasco (2-1) was terrific in an emergency start for lefty Jimmy Gobble, who was scratched due to a sore biceps muscle. Carrasco got his second win facing the Express, allowing just one run on three hits over five innings.

Down 4-1, the Express rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth off southpaw Derrin Ebert, who just joined Omaha today from Kansas City's extended spring camp in Surprise, Arizona.

But, in the bottom of the sixth, the Royals enjoyed their biggest inning of the season, with help from some sloppy defense. Round Rock committed three errors in the frame and had another throw to the plate go off target. Omaha also scored two runs on a bad-hop single to short off the bat of Scott Walter, which extended his hitting streak to all five games he has played in. Express reliever Phil Norton, who made two of the errors on pickoff throws to first, was charged with all six runs – five earned – in an inning-and-a-third.

Steve Stemle pitched a perfect eighth and Byron Embry allowed just one single while finishing up in the ninth.

In the balloting by kids 17-and-under, Casey won the blue and the red (even the yellow) seats, garnering 78 percent of the vote, compared to 12 percent for Mayor Mike Fahey and 10 percent for Dave Friend.

The final game of the series is Monday at 11:05 a.m: LH Wandy Rodriguez (2-0, 2.45) vs. RH Ryan Jensen (0-1, 5.73). It's Cox Communications Home Run for Youth Day. Air-time is 10:45 on Fox Sports Radio 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
