Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (June 20, 2008) - The New Jersey Jackals used three well-timed homeruns to defeat the Brockton Rox 5-4 in the first game of a three-game series on Friday night at Campanelli Stadium. The Jackals tied the game in the ninth with 3B Chris Kelly's solo home run, and won with another solo shot by C Craig Maddox in the 12th.
The game was marred by a 40 minute rain delay in the middle of the third inning, but when play resumed, Brockton took the first lead with a fourth inning RBI by 1B Francisco Lebron which plated RF Jud Thigpen. Rox starter RHP Stevie Delabar cruised through the first five innings, sending down 15 in-a-row at one point, but New Jersey finally struck with two outs in the sixth inning. 2B Marcus Sanders reached on a single and the next batter, 1B Matt Lauderdale hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Jackals a 2-1 lead.
Both teams exchanged runs as the Rox tied the game in the sixth and the seventh innings, and Brockton appeared to have taken the lead for good in the eighth inning with Lebron's second RBI of the game. However Rox closer RHP Jerry Dunn allowed a leadoff homerun to Chris Kelly in the top of the ninth to tie the game for the third time at 4-4. RHP Mike McTamney allowed the 12th inning home run to Maddox in his second inning of relief.
Delabar was making his first appearance for Brockton, and delivered a quality start, lasting 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. He did not walk anyone and struck out three. Both teams moved their respective records to 13-14 on the season.
Brockton and New Jersey will meet again on Saturday night as the Rox send RHP John Kelly (2-1, 1.08 ERA) to meet Jackals LHP Isaac Pavlick (2-2, 5.70 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
