Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Atlantic City, NJ - Righty Eddie Pena tossed 8 brilliant innings and teamed up with lefty Ryan Lobban on a four-hit shutout, as the Worcester Tornadoes blanked the Atlantic City Surf, 3-0, at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Friday night.
Pena (3-1), was in control from the start, retiring the first 9 batters he faced in the game. Surf lefty Adam Cox (2-2) matched zeroes with Pena in the runs column, until Worcester finally broke through in the 4th inning. Chris Colabello led off with a double and scored easily on an RBI single by Francisco Caraballo. The Tornadoes made it 2-0 in the 5th when a Scott Grimes two-out RBI double plated Jeff LaHair from first base. That would be more than enough for Pena. The Worcester righty finished off his best outing as a pro by pitching 8 shutout innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out two. The Tornadoes tacked on an unearned insurance run in the 8th off righty Aaron Easton on three walks and an error. Lobban pitched a perfect 9th with two strikeouts to complete the shutout.
Pena (3-1) picked up the victory in the longest outing of his professional career. Cox (2-2) took the loss. Lobban was credited with his first save of the season. Grimes extended his hitting streak to 12 games and his on-base streak to 25 games. Caraballo walked twice on the night, and has now drawn six free passes in his last four games. The Tornadoes are now 5-1 in games started by opposing lefties. Worcester will try to make it back-to-back victories over the Surf and move a season-high nine games over .500 when they play Game Two of their three-game series in Atlantic City on Saturday night. Righty Shaun McNamara will get the start for Worcester and he will be opposed by Surf righty Jim Wladyka. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
