Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (June 11, 2007) - Quebec C Corey Stang hit a two-out, run scoring triple in the top of the tenth inning to complete a late inning rally as the Capitales defeated the Brockton Rox 4-3 in 10 innings before 1,508 at Campanelli Stadium Monday evening. The Rox had a 3-0 lead going into the top of the ninth inning, but the Capitales rallied to tie the game on three hits and a Rox fielding error. RHP John Kelly picked up a no-decision on the hill for the Rox, despite tossing seven shutout innings and fanning a season-best 11 batters. SS/3B Fredy De La Cruz had two hits and an RBI for the Rox, and CF Joe Hough hit his second HR of the year in the loss.
Hough homered for the second time this season, leading off the game in the bottom of the first inning. Both of his HR this year have come leading off the Rox first. Kelly faced little trouble in his seven innings on the hill. He fanned RF Scotty Martin in the seventh inning for his 11th strikeout of the night, stranding two runners on base. The game remained 1-0 Rox into the bottom of the eighth inning. Against RHP Shawn Ryan, who relieved starter RHP Keith Dunn after Dunn left with an injury in the fourth inning, the Rox plated two runs on sacrifice flies by RF Matt Maloney and De La Cruz. The Rox called upon RHP Kyle George to close the game in the ninth.
George retired the first batter on a strikeout, one of 15 for the pitching staff on the night. Stang homered to end the shutout, and 3B Eddie Lantigua singled with one out. After another single, a groundout pulled the Capitales to within a run. With two outs and a 3-2 Rox lead, De La Cruz committed a throwing error and 1B John Welch dropped the throw, allowing PR Taka Uchida to score from second to tie the game. In the tenth, Stang doubled home CF Goefrey Tomlinson as Quebec took a 4-3 lead, and RHP T.J. Stanton saved it for the Capitales in the 10th.
Tuesday, RHP Luis Carreras (4-0, 1.42 ERA) makes his first start of the season as he faces former Rox LHP Kevin Beavers (0-0, 7.04 ERA) at 7:05 PM at Campanelli Stadium.
