Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Little Falls, NJ -- Shortstop Bobby Tewksbary homered and knocked in four runs, and the bullpen didn't allow an earned run over 5.2 innings, as the Worcester Tornadoes beat the New Jersey Jackals, 8-3, to win their fifth game in a row.
The Tornadoes scored first for the 8th straight game, using a Euvi Solano double, an error and a Dominic Ramos sacrifice fly to go up 1-0 in the 1st. Worcester would break things open in the 3rd against New Jersey lefty Josh Brey (2-2), stringing together a walk and and five consecutive singles after two were out to score four times and take a 5-0 lead. Yohanny Valera and Andrew Wishy each had RBI hits in the inning and Tewksbary added a big two-run single.
But the first-place Jackals chipped away in the bottom half of the inning, as Francisco Leandro took Matt Weagle deep with a man aboard to make it 5-2. Weagle would leave with a tight hamstring after 3.1 innings and is day-to-day. The Tornadoes bullpen would pick up the slack, as John Birtwell (3-2) and Chris Shank combined to allow just 3 hits and one unearned run over the final 5.2 innings. Bobby Tewksbary added a two-run blast in the 7th and a Patrick Perry sacrifice fly in the 9th provided the final 8-3 tally.
Birtwell (3-2) picked up the win and Brey (2-2) took the loss. Shank pitched the final three innings for his second save. Solano and Tewksbary each had three-hit games and Valera and Perry added two hits apiece. The Tornadoes have won 7 of their last 8 games and sit a season-high two games over .500 at 10-8. Worcester will seek their sixth straight victory Tuesday night in Game Two of their three-game series in New jersey against the Jackals. Righty Alex Pena will take the mound for the Tornadoes and he will be opposed by New Jersey lefty Demetrius Banks. The Tornadoes are 5-1 in games started by opposing lefthanders this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
