Jackals Bats Dormant in 8-3 Loss

New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The Jackals returned home from Quebec in the early hours on Monday morning after a seven day road trip that featured seven games. The team was stellar during the road trip, going 5-2 and taking sole possession of first place.

However, the mental and physical taxation of a long road trip appeared too steep of a hill to climb as the Jackals dropped the first game of a three game series against Worcester, 8-3.

Josh Brey took the mound for the Jackals and his stellar 2.37 ERA for the season was immediately chipped away at.

In the first inning third baseman Euvi Solano led off with a double to the right field gap. Right fielder Clyde Williams misplayed the ball, allowing Solano to advance to third. The next batter, center fielder Dominic Ramos, drove a 2-2 pitch to deep center, scoring Solano on a sacrifice fly.

The Tornadoes would strike again in the top of the third thanks to a walk by Ramos and then 5 consecutive 2 out hits. Catcher Yohanny Valera drove in Ramos, and then both Valera and first baseman Chris Colabello were driven in by right fielder Andrew Wishy.

The Jackals would muster up some offense in the bottom of that inning thanks to center fielder Francisco Leandro's two-run blast over the right field wall. Leandro was the lone bright spot in the Jackals line up, finishing the game 3-4 with two runs and two RBI. Leandro finished just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

With the game starting to become a contest, Worcester starter Matt Weagle left the game unexpectedly with a pulled hamstring. Despite the unexpected departure, Worcester's bullpen was strong, completely shutting down the Jackals offense.

In the top of the seventh the Tornadoes put the game out of reach for good thanks to a two-run homerun by short stop Bobby Tewksberry. Tewksberry finished the game 4-3 with 4 RBI.

Despite the Jackals loss, they maintain a .5 game lead for first place in the Can-Am League.

Brey took the loss for the Jackals, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings. The loss drops his record to 2-2.

John Burtwell earned the win for the Tornadoes in relief.
