New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - A driving rainstorm that rolled in during the bottom of the fifth inning, Monday night, turned a 2-0 Cutters' lead into victory as heavy rains that were expected to last through the night ended the game after four and a half innings and a 1:26 delay, giving New Haven County game one of a three-game series against the Sussex Skyhawks at Historic Yale Field.
Cutters' starter LHP Ryan Bonesio (2-1) was extremely sharp in his 5.0 innings of work in the abbreviate game, scattering three hits and striking out three to earn credit for the win.
Shortstop Chas Terni put the Cutters on the board 1-0 in the first inning with a two-out RBI single. Terni went 2-for-2 on the short night.
A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt from second baseman Matt Mercurio opened the door for another Cutters' run in the third inning that was knocked in with a sacrifice fly from third baseman Junior Zamora, setting the score at 2-0.
Skyhawks' starter LHP Brian Ford (1-1) allowed both runs on five hits and three walks in 4.0 innings and took the loss.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for a special 11:05 am start Tuesday for School Day at Historic Yale Field.
RHP Joslin Ramirez (2-1) will take the mound for the Cutters.
