Rox acquired IF Alex Sumner
from New York (NYSL) in exchange for cash - official as of August 3rd, 2011
Sumner rejoins the Rox after playing eight games with
Brockton
toward the end of July. Sumner is hitting .222 in 40 games with both Brockton and New York in 2011.
Rox placed RHP Steven Richard on irrevocable waivers - official as of August 5th, 2011
Richard was 0-0 in seven appearances out of the bullpen with
Brockton
and posted a 1.50 ERA through six innings. Richard had recently been battling a right shoulder injury and previously had a stint on the disabled list with bicep tendonitis.
Rox signed RHP John Kelly - official as of August 5th, 2011
Kelly returns for another stint in
Brockton
after pitching for the Rox from 2006 to 2009.
Entering 2011, Kelly is the Rox all-time leader in strikeouts with 328 and is second all time in wins (26), innings pitched (372.2) and games started (56). The veteran righthander embarks on his 18th season of professional baseball, which has included stops in
Taiwan,
Mexico
and
Italy .
Kelly spent several years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners organizations, reaching as high as triple-A with the Mariners in 2004. Kelly most recently pitched for the Worcester Tornadoes of the Can-Am League in 2010 and posted a 9-5 record with a 3.61 ERA.
Rox placed RHP Zach Woods on irrevocable waivers - official as of August 5th, 2011
Woods was acquired from
New York
on July 29th and made three appearances out of the Rox bullpen. Between his time in New York and Brockton, Woods posted a 0-1 record with a 2.53 ERA in ten and 2/3 innings of work.
Rox signed LHP Brad Hertzler - official as of August 5th, 2011
Hertzler is back in Brockton after being previously released in mid-July.
The southpaw is 0-3 with a 4.43 ERA in 19 appearances so far in 2011.
The former Oakland Athletics prospect has appeared in 90 games out of the bullpen in three seasons with the Rox, which is third all-time in club history.
The Brockton Rox roster now stands at 22 active (11 pitchers, 11 position players, 1 Disabled).
