August 5, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Brockton 2, Rockland 0
Pitching performances don't get much better than the one shelled out by Brockton starter Freddy Flores on Friday. In the Rox' 2-0 win against Rockland, Flores threw a complete-game shutout, allowing only three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. The Rox out-hit the Boulders with their second-inning performance alone. The frame opened with four straight hits that plated two runs, the first on a double from C Chris Grossman. It was Grossman's only hit of the night and accounted for his 32nd RBI of the year. With the win, Flores is one game above .500 at 6-5 with a 3.90 ERA.
Worcester 11, New York 2
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Tornadoes got an inning-opening double from DH Nick Salotti. Then another two-bagger from RF Ryan Crespi. And five batters later in the inning, yet another double from 1B Chris Colabello. When all was said and done, Worcester had scored seven runs in the frame on the back of five doubles. The club added two runs in the sixth and another in the eighth while the pitching staff kept New York quiet en route to an 11-2 win. Salotti finished the game going 3-for-5 - all of his hits, doubles - with a run and two RBI. Starting Worcester pitcher Kevin Cooper earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing two runs before a quartet of relievers took over for the sixth through ninth innings.
Pittsfield 10, New Jersey 8
The Colonials never lost hope against New Jersey on Friday. Once trailing, 6-0, Pittsfield used a seven-run third and a three-run eighth to take a 10-8 win over the Jackals. Pittsfield took advantage of a two consecutive free passes to open the third, getting hit after hit - several for extra bases - and plating runs with ease once they had men on base. Three of those runs came with a single swing of 2B Peter Fatse's bat. With two on, two out and three runs already across in the inning, Fatse hit his fourth home run of the year to tie the score at six. New Jersey pushed a couple more across to take an 8-7 lead in the middle innings. But a two-run bomb from SS Danny Bomback sealed the deal in the eighth, breaking an 8-8 tie and giving Pittsfield the final advantage.
Newark 6, Quebec 4 (11 innings)
With no changes on the scoreboard since the sixth inning, the Bears and Capitales took a 3-3 tie into the 11th. But Newark made it out of the frame with twice their earlier run production, plating three on back-to-back doubles to earn the win. The pair of extra-base hits came from Brandon Watson and Paddy Matera, who combined to go 5-for-10 with a run and four RBI in the game. Watson, the leadoff left fielder, nearly matched Quebec with three runs batted in by himself. The Capitales loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 11th, but managed only one run and failed to push the game any farther into extras. Quebec took the first lead of the game in the second, when a Mitch Delaney groundout brought home Robert Wagner.
