New Jersey Jackals News Release

Pittsfield, Mass. - Nick Santomauro laced a grand slam as part of a six-run New Jersey outburst in the second inning, but the Jackals fell to the Pittsfield Colonials, 10-8, on Friday night at Wahconah Park in the opener of a four-game series. The win was Pittsfield's fifth in a row.

The Jackals jumped out to an early lead in the second when back-to-back doubles to start the frame by Nick Giarraputo and Myron Leslie gave them a 1-0 edge. An RBI single by Mike Jones made it 2-0 and, later in the inning, Santomauro lined a grand slam to the left of the batters eye to give the Jackals a 6-0 advantage.

However, the Colonials struck Jackals' starter Michael Moore for seven runs in the third inning to jump in front. A three-run homer by Peter Fatse tied the score at six before a Quentin Davis RBI single gave Pittsfield a 7-6 lead.

New Jersey rallied back though, tying the game on an RBI infield single off the bat of D'Angelo Jimenez in the fourth inning before re-taking the lead when Myron Leslie launched a solo home run to right field in the sixth to make it 8-7 in favor of the Jackals.

In the bottom of the eighth, Pittsfield struck Jackals' reliever Steve Fox for three two-out runs, tying the game at eight when Jerod Edmondson doubled off the top of the left field wall and taking the lead on what proved to be a game-winning, two-run Danny Bomback homer lined just over the right field wall to make it 10-8.

The Jackals went down fighting, loading the based in the top of the ninth before Mike Zenko struck out Jordan Newton and Santomauro to end the contest and stand the tying run at second.

Fox (0-1) suffered the loss while Zenko (6-1) notched the win. Moore tied a career high with nine strikeouts, allowing seven runs on nine hits over five innings. Pittsfield starter Dave Qualben was tagged for seven runs on 11 hits over five frames.

The Jackals and Colonials play the second contest of their four-game series on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Wahconah Park when New Jersey sends southpaw Jon Kibler (0-4, 7.59 ERA) to the mound against Pittsfield rookie left-hander T.J. Wink (3-0, 2.30 ERA). Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
