St. Cloud Rox News Release
ST CLOUD-The St Cloud Rox fell victim to the longball in a 7-5 loss to Willmar Sunday night at Joe Faber Field in front of 1,758 fans. The Stingers hit four home runs in the victory and finish 2012 with an 8-2 record against St. Cloud.
Phil Imholte led the way for St Cloud with a 2-3, two run, three RBI night that included his first home run of the season. Jamie Simpson (Eastern Michigan) also performed well for the Rox at the plate, going 2-3 with a stolen base. Carlos Lopez had a pair of RBI in the game for St. Cloud as well.
Billy Soule (Minnesota) was the tough-luck loser on the hill for the Rox. The righty allowed four earned runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking only one Stingers batter.
Willmar hit a solo jack in the top of the first with two outs to take the early lead. The Rox responded with a Chris Paul (California) leadoff triple in the bottom of the first, followed by a Phil Imholte (St Cloud State) sacrifice bunt to tie the game 1-1.
The Stingers re-took the lead with a two-run bomb in the top of the third inning, making the score 3-1. Again, St Cloud answered back in the bottom of the frame when Imholte blasted his first home run of the season to deep left field to lead off the frame and cut the Stingers lead to 3-2.
Willmar added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on an error and a single to give them a 5-2 edge through six innings. The Rox got a single run in the bottom of the seventh on a Henkemeyer triple with two outs and a Carlos Lopez (Cal State Fullerton) RBI bunt single to make the score 5-3.
After both teams were held scoreless in the eighth inning the Stingers hit a pair of bombs in the top of the ninth to increase their lead to 7-3. St. Cloud scraped together a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth but fell short of a comeback with the final score 7-5.
