(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers were able to hold on for a 6-2 victory over the Duluth Huskies on Sunday in Rochester, MN to split the two-game series.
Rochester was finally able to defeat Duluth pitcher Joey Novak (Harvard), who was undefeated in his previous two appearances against the Honkers. Novak is now 7-2.
The Honkers scored first with an RBI single from right fielder Jordan Parr (Illinois) to score shortstop Mike Lukkason (Dakota Wesleyan) from second base in the bottom of the third inning. Parr finished the game a perfect 5 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs.
Catcher Cole Lankford (Texas A&M) made it 2-0 in the fourth inning on a solo home run to right field. Lankford also had a great day at the plate with 3 hits in 4 at bats with the home run and two and RBIs.
Kevin Johnson (Illinois) was impressive for the Honkers with 8.0 innings of two-run baseball. Johnson allowed eight Duluth hits and struck out five to pick up his first victory of the summer. The Fighting Illini hurler is now 1-3.
Rochester scored two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and one in the eighth to go ahead 6-2 and put the Huskies away.
Dakota Smith finished his day at the plate 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
The Honkers (9-13, 24-33) travel to Willmar, MN tomorrow, July 30th to begin a three-game set with the Willmar Stingers (12-9, 32-24). First pitch from Bill Taunton Stadium is set for 7:05 PM. On the mound for Rochester will be lefty Jared Miller (Vanderbilt), who is 3-2 with a 3.96 ERA in six games. The Stingers will start right-hander Kyle Fischer (St. Cloud State). Fischer is 3-1 in nine games with an ERA of 5.85.
The Honkers will not be back home until Sunday, August 5th when they battle the Thunder Bay Border Cats at 1:05 PM.
There is a change in plans for the silent auction of the ovarian cancer awareness jerseys that the Honkers were sporting today. Fans will now have all week to bid for their favorite player's game worn "awareness" jersey, which were made possible by the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA), Northside Mini Storage, and y-105FM. The bidding will end next Sunday, August 5th at the end of the seventh inning when the Honkers play the Thunder Bay Border Cats at Mayo Field. The starting price for each jersey is $60 and the minimum bidding increment is $5.
