Brockton Rox News Release

August 25, 2005 - Thanks to the right arm of Dennis Boyd and the bat of Craig Lewis, North Division-leading Brockton (23-11) avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of South Division-leading New Haven County (22-13) with an 8-4 victory at Yale Field.

Boyd worked eight strong innings, scattering seven hits while striking out seven. And when a three-run homer cut what had been a five-run Rox lead to one, Lewis rejected all thoughts of a Cutters comeback with a three-run blast of his own.

A four-run first inning for Brockton had New Haven County starter Tim Keinath on the ropes early. Jake Daubert put the scoreboard operator to work with a run-scoring double three batters into the game. After a single and a walk loaded the bases with one out, Eddie Gerald's groundout brought home Daubert. Rox designated hitter Kris Zacuto then cleared the bases with a ringing double.

A run in the second for Brockton was matched by one in the third for New Haven, keeping the Cutters' deficit at four.

In the bottom of the fifth, the home team put runners on the corners with one out against the Oil Can. Lead-off hitter Keto Anderson followed by slicing a low fly ball right down the line that just made it over the four-foot wall. The Brockton lead, so comfortable since the first inning, had been cut to one at 5-4.

Keinath retired the first two batters quickly in the sixth, but successive singles by Eugene Julien and Daubert brought clean-up man Lewis to the plate. The subsequent blast ceased all of the Cutters' momentum.

In case New Haven County had any thoughts of further rallying, Boyd set down with ease the last nine men he faced. The most visible victim of the Oil Can's dominance was Cutters first baseman Bill Peavey, who watched his league record streak of consecutive games reaching base end at 50 after an 0-for-4 evening.

The victorious Boyd (4-3) has now made fourteen starts in 2005, lasting fewer than six innings in only one of them. In his last five outings, he has gone at least seven innings in each one. Keinath (3-7) worked six frames in the loss, allowing eleven hits and eight runs.

The Rox now head out to New Jersey to play three games against the Jackals starting Friday night at 7:05, Grant Dorn going to the mound for Brockton.
