New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters were denied the chance for a series sweep against the Brockton Rox, losing 8-4 at Yale Field on Thursday night. The loss snapped the Cutters three game winning streak.

With most of the pre-game attention centered on Brockton's starting pitcher, the 45-year old former major leaguer Dennis ?Oil Can? Boyd, the Rox?s offense quickly stole the spotlight away from their veteran hurler. They jumped on Cutters starter Tim Keinath and before the home side could even come to the plate, the score was 4-0.

Four runs looked like it was going to be enough for the crafty Boyd. He used every bit of his guile to keep the Cutters batters off-balance and uncomfortable at the plate.

Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Cutters had their best opportunity to get back in the game. After singles by Orlando Encarnacion and Mike LaRosa, Keto Anderson muscled a Boyd pitch into the short porch picnic area for a three-run home run. It was his fourth home run of the season. Boyd would get out of the inning without further damage.

Any hopes of a Cutters comeback were quickly quelled in the top of the sixth. Craig Lewis hit his second home run in as many days, a three run homer of his own that scored Eugene Julien and Jake Daubert.

Boyd (4-3) tossed eight innings allowing four earned runs and striking out seven. Keinath's, whose solid outing was tarnished by the big first inning and the Lewis blast, pitched six innings, surrendering 11 hits and eight earned runs. The relievers for both teams, Tony Stutz for the Rox and Adam Nikolic and Andy Weimer for the Cutters, did not allow any runs.

The Cutters travel to Worcester on Friday to begin an important three-game series that features the top two teams in the Can-Am League South Division. Thursday's loss did not hurt New Haven County in the standings, as Worcester lost to Quebec, keeping the three-game division lead intact.
