Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - June 28, 2011) - The Brockton Rox (16-14) lashed the New York Federals (5-26) for a franchise record 19 runs on 19 hits, besting their previous mark of 17 runs scored, in a 19-0 series opening blowout at Campanelli Stadium.
The Bockton bats got to work early against Luis Pardo (0-2), opening up a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, capped off by Trey Hernandez's grand slam.
Hernandez, who's home run was his first as a professional, led the way with a 5-for-6 performance, collecting four RBIs, but was followed closely by Chris Grossman. The catcher plated a team high five base-runners, including a three-run blast on the way to a 3-for-6 night.
Pardo got knocked around through four and 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits, while striking out five and walking one. He was let down immensely by his defense however, as the Federals made five errors in the game, causing only three of the nine runs to be earned.
Still ahead 6-0 after a scoreless second and third inning, the Rox offense began to raise the tally, scoring in each of the final five frames. Every Rox batter crossed home at least once and Melvin Falu alone scored a team high four runs.
Dominic Ramos added some fire power at the bottom of the lineup, going 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Mike Torres hit his second homer of the season and finished the evening with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Jorge Jimenez chipped in with an RBI and three runs scored to go along with three base hits.
Dustin Birosak (3-0) was dominant in the winning effort, putting out his best performance in a Rox uniform to date. His stellar outing was overshadowed by the record breaking offensive display, but certainly should not go unnoticed. The southpaw scattered seven hits through a season high six shutout frames, while walking one and striking out a season high eight.
The trio of Robert Bono, Dan Schmidt and Reid Jackson each added a scoreless frame of work out of the Brockton bullpen.
New York centerfielder Stephen Pinto went 3-for-4 in the loss.
The Rox had scored 17 runs multiple times in their franchise history, most recently in a win over the Newark Bears 17-14 at Riverfront Stadium on June 17, 2011. Birosak was the winning pitcher in that game as well.
The series continues Wednesday night with Freddy Flores taking the mound for Brockton. The Federals will send Jake Loye to the hill for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
